Description

Commercial Banking Attorney
The Commercial Banking Attorney will be situated at either the Bank's offices in Detroit, Michigan, or its principal place of business in Dallas, Texas but approved for a hybrid working arrangement. The attorney will act as part of a team of attorneys that supports various business units regarding a broad range of non-lending commercial financial products and services, including business account, treasury and cash management, merchant processing and commercial card products and services. This is not a litigation or compliance position.

Position Competencies
This attorney position requires the highest level of legal analysis, integrity, trust and judgment. The successful attorney must have excellent oral and written communication skills, superb people skills, the ability to learn new areas of law quickly, business acumen, political savvy, and an ability to anticipate and meet the needs of client groups with a level of flexibility.

Position Responsibilities

  • Address and handle substantive matters, projects, etc., including providing legal support, advice and counsel to business units and senior management regarding non-lending commercial financial products and services and other business matters, and provide appropriate counsel and guidance to identify and mitigate potential risk or significant negative impact to the Bank.
  • Provide legal support and counsel in connection with the development and implementation of commercial banking products and services.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements, contracts, other legal documents and create standard forms as necessary.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and best practices and advise business units and senior management of potential legal risks and implications of the same.
  • Assign, manage and monitor matters to outside counsel.


Requirements

Position Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate or Master of Laws degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing with the state bar association of a footprint state of the Bank (i.e., Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan or Texas) or, if licensed in another state, able to qualify for admission in a footprint state of the Bank within 180 days of employment
  • 5 years of experience with either a U.S. law firm and/or in-house legal department with a focus on commercial banking transactions and related matters
  • Knowledge of commercial banking services and products, preferably treasury and merchant services, commercial depository accounts, commercial cards, electronic financial transactions and/or the payments industry
  • Experience with, or demonstrated interest in, digital products/services, online and mobile banking, and/or emerging payments technology a plus
